World Diabetes Day
November 14, 2020

Diabetes Mellitus is the failure of the pancreas to produce sufficient insulin to break down glucose in the blood. Therefore, causing the blood sugar to rise.

There are 3 types of Diabetes

  1. Type 1: Insulin making cells in type-1 diabetes are destroyed by the immune system. This type of diabetes generally occurs in childhood or early teenage years.
  2. Type 2: Insulin is not created sufficiently by the pancreas or the body does not react to insulin the way it should.
  3. Gestational Diabetes: Insulin resistance that occurs in a pregnant lady. This type of diabetes can be permanent in the mother after giving birth, but if controlled by meal planning, exercising, and normal weight gain during pregnancy, this condition is temporary.

While type 1 diabetes is hardly preventable due to it being an auto-immune disease that a person is born with and develops in their adolescence or teenage years.

Type 2 diabetes is preventable as long as hereditary factors are not playing a huge effect. Usually, type 2 diabetes occurs if a person does not control their food intake and portions, which leads to obesity and therefore, develops insulin resistance and other diseases such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, high triglycerides etc.

Prevention of type 2 diabetes is not that hard, provide yourself with time to do some physical activity, take care of your food items and portions, stay away from high fat food and excess consumption of carbohydrates. Lose excess weight. Stay fit and healthy!

A study published in June 2014 shows that the consumption of probiotics may have effectiveness in preventing and managing both Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota is a type of probiotic found in Yakult Light and can be consumed safely by diabetic patients due to its ingredients. It has no sugar added and is 25% less in calories.
